The Hanford site occupied the portion of Benton County lying, very approximately, east of a north-south line drawn between Cold Creek and Prosser, and north of the east-west line marked \"T 10 N\" on this map.
Towns already in existence in that area, Hanford and White Bluff being the largest two, were evacuated. The government issued \"declaration of taking\" documents to those living there, basically giving residents somewhere between 2 days and 90 days to pack and relocate. Residents were reimbursed based on an assessment of property values established by an external assessor. Those few residents who remained did so as government employees providing services to the AEC, and paid rent to the government for the use of what had previously been their own land. Even the cemeteries were removed to Prosser.
Native Americans who used fishing grounds on the Columbia within the area refused any payment, and eventually those in charge allowed the Indians to continue fishing there. However, to do so, those fishing had to agree to be trucked in by the government, and were under armed guard while within the Hanford boundaries.
At present, nothing remains of the town of White Bluffs- all the buildings have been removed or destroyed, and only the foundations remain to indicate that a town (and a somewhat important Columbia River crossing) ever existed there. One of its defining features, the Columbia River drainage system, further connects the region to southwestern Canada, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada. Through its history, the Greater Columbia Plateau has experienced dramatic environmental, social, and cultural transformations. In this course we will explore two fundamental aspects of Columbia Plateau history: the nature of human interactions and the relationship between humans and the environment. Human interactions include migrations, the treatment of indigenous peoples, militarization, trans-national relations, the struggle between labor and capital, and the politics of inclusion and exclusion. Among the human-environmental relations we will emphasize are environmental degradation and rehabilitation, the perception and construction of (sometimes contending) cultural landscapes and senses of place, industrial agriculture, tourism, and water development. \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nThis fall you will begin participation in a year-long hybrid seminar for graduate and undergraduate students that will explore the cultures and the environments of the Greater Columbia Plateau from multiple disciplinary points of view. We will begin by discussing different theories and methods for understanding regions and places before focusing on and developing the main subject areas for this first year: Plateau Cultural Landscapes, Making the Plateau Bloom, and the Atomic Plateau. During each three to four week period we will focus on readings related to these subject areas. We will have guests from various departments within the university (Sociology, English, Engineering, etc.) introduce their approaches to the region. We will make field trips to important sites (Walla Walla, Grand Coulee, and Hanford) for study and documentation. We will invite visiting scholars from outside the university to speak. \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nBy the last weeks of this fall seminar and leading into the spring, we will begin to consider in more concrete ways how to organize a multi-tiered digital archive that includes the processing of Columbia Plateau-related collections within the WSU Manuscripts and Special Collections and ultimately the creation of a website that highlights these collections as well as the work that WSU faculty and students are doing and which is related to the Columbia Plateau. The spring seminar will therefore build on the expertise and understandings that we develop in the fall. By spring we will begin to put those understandings into action as part of a lasting project that will serve the general public and the WSU community for years to come."]]]],["element",{"elementId":"37"},["name","Contributor"],["description","An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"99831"},["text","Trevor Bond (WSU)"]]]]]]]],["itemType",{"itemTypeId":"6"},["name","Still Image"],["description","A static visual representation. This Treaty was a source of great disagreement among the Nez Perce- many opposed it, and many Chiefs refused to sign it. These non-signers would provide the basis for further difficulties, as many Nez Perce did not consider themselves bound by the Treaty, though the American government considered them to be so. The Indian argument was convincing enough that in 1873 President Grant restored to the Nez Perce the territory shown in yellow in addition to their pre-existing reservation (blue). The government soon revoked its own proclamation, however, and the Indians were ordered off the lands. The Indians were given thirty days to depart, but confrontations between impatient settlers and unhappy evictees grew to conflicts, and the Nez Perce War began in 1877."]]]],["element",{"elementId":"49"},["name","Subject"],["description","The topic of the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"29980"},["text","Indians of North America -- Northwest, Pacific -- Maps
Indian reservations -- Idaho -- Maps
Snake River--Maps
Nez Perce"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"51"},["name","Type"],["description","The nature or genre of the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"29981"},["text","Maps"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"38"},["name","Coverage"],["description","The spatial or temporal topic of the resource, the spatial applicability of the resource, or the jurisdiction under which the resource is relevant"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"29982"},["text","United States--Washington Territory
United States--Oregon
United States--Idaho
United States--Montana"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"47"},["name","Rights"],["description","Information about rights held in and over the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"29983"},["text","Contact Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections, for copyright information 509 335-6691"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"48"},["name","Source"],["description","A related resource from which the described resource is derived"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"29984"},["text","Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections, WSU Libraries"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"43"},["name","Identifier"],["description","An unambiguous reference to the resource within a given context"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"29985"},["text","WSU 470
E93 .U53 8th, 1876"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"42"},["name","Format"],["description","The file format, physical medium, or dimensions of the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"29986"},["text","image/jpeg"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"37"},["name","Contributor"],["description","An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"29987"},["text","Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"44"},["name","Language"],["description","A language of the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"29988"},["text","English"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"46"},["name","Relation"],["description","A related resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"29989"},["text","Is part of Annual report of the Board of Indian Commissioners to the Secretary of the Interior 1876"]]]]]]]],["item",{"itemId":"1937","public":"1","featured":"0"},["fileContainer",["file",{"fileId":"741"},["src","http://digitalexhibits.libraries.wsu.edu/files/original/httpcontentwsulibswsuedumapsimage327_9c5865704b.jpg"],["authentication","26f955c842b4b4ee054878747f772fbc"],["elementSetContainer",["elementSet",{"elementSetId":"5"},["name","Omeka Image File"],["description","The metadata element set that was included in the `files_images` table in previous versions of Omeka.
