After he graduated, he was an engineer with the Northern Pacific Railroad in establishing what was known as the Auburn Cut-off that made Seattle rather than Tacoma its terminus. Later he was City Engineer for Everett; construction engineer with the Union Pacific and the Spokane International for which he was in charge of constructing some 30 miles of railroad outside of Dawson City, Alaska; district engineer in Seattle; Superintendent of Streets and Sewers for Seattle; and finally (about 1921) City Engineer for Seattle under three different mayors. Immigrants flocked to the US from all over the world in this time period. Millions of Europeans moved to the US where they drove the growth of cities and manned the rapid industrialization that was taking place. In the western US many, many Chinese immigrants arrived to work on the railroad and in mines. As is often the case in the United States, the people who already lived in the US reacted kind of badly to this flood of immigrants. Some legislators tried to stem the flow of new arrivals, with mixed success. Grover Cleveland vetoed a general ban on immigration, but the leadership at the time did manage to get together to pass and anti-Chinese immigration law. Immigrants did win some important Supreme Court decisions upholding their rights, but in many ways, immigrants were treated as second class citizens. At the same time, the country was rapidly urbanizing. Cities were growing rapidly and industrial technology was developing new wonders all the time. John will cover all this upheaval and change, and hearken back to a time when racial profiling did in fact boil down to analyzing the side of someone's face. \n\nSupport CrashCourse on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/crashcourse"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"40"},["name","Date"],["description","A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"103161"},["text","2013-08-15T22:06:55.000Z"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"48"},["name","Source"],["description","A related resource from which the described resource is derived"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"103162"},["text","http://YouTube.com"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"47"},["name","Rights"],["description","Information about rights held in and over the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"103163"},["text","<a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/static?template=terms\">Standard YouTube License</a><br>This video represents licensed content on YouTube, meaning that the content has been claimed by a YouTube content partner."]]]],["element",{"elementId":"45"},["name","Publisher"],["description","An entity responsible for making the resource available"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"103164"},["text","CrashCourse<br>published via YouTube.com"]]]]]]],["tagContainer",["tag",{"tagId":"311"},["name","19th century"]],["tag",{"tagId":"307"},["name","APUSH"]],["tag",{"tagId":"319"},["name","Canal St"]],["tag",{"tagId":"313"},["name","Chicago"]],["tag",{"tagId":"316"},["name","Chinatown"]],["tag",{"tagId":"323"},["name","chinese"]],["tag",{"tagId":"315"},["name","Ellis Island"]],["tag",{"tagId":"308"},["name","exam"]],["tag",{"tagId":"329"},["name","Geary Act"]],["tag",{"tagId":"328"},["name","Grover Cleveland"]],["tag",{"tagId":"310"},["name","immigrants"]],["tag",{"tagId":"184"},["name","Immigration"]],["tag",{"tagId":"330"},["name","Immigration Restriction"]],["tag",{"tagId":"321"},["name","Irish Potato Famine"]],["tag",{"tagId":"317"},["name","Little Italy"]],["tag",{"tagId":"318"},["name","Mulberry St"]],["tag",{"tagId":"320"},["name","naturalization"]],["tag",{"tagId":"312"},["name","New York"]],["tag",{"tagId":"322"},["name","persecution"]],["tag",{"tagId":"332"},["name","profilin"]],["tag",{"tagId":"331"},["name","racism"]],["tag",{"tagId":"314"},["name","San Francisco"]],["tag",{"tagId":"324"},["name","ships"]],["tag",{"tagId":"325"},["name","steerage"]],["tag",{"tagId":"309"},["name","study"]],["tag",{"tagId":"18"},["name","test"]],["tag",{"tagId":"306"},["name","US History"]],["tag",{"tagId":"327"},["name","Wong Kim Ark"]],["tag",{"tagId":"326"},["name","Yick Wo"]]]],["item",{"itemId":"2092","public":"1","featured":"0"},["fileContainer",["file",{"fileId":"896"},["src","http://digitalexhibits.libraries.wsu.edu/files/original/httpcontentwsulibswsuedumapsimage489_219c8d70fb.jpg"],["authentication","03a3d25be20da91fc71dcfcb3c083fe4"],["elementSetContainer",["elementSet",{"elementSetId":"5"},["name","Omeka Image File"],["description","The metadata element set that was included in the `files_images` table in previous versions of Omeka.
