Description
A photograph of a Home Economics laboratory located in Van Doren, WSU building #37. Six cakes are placed on a small wooden table in the left foreground. Two long counters run across the room with cooking surfaces on top. A female student in white decorates a cake under the watchful presence of an instructor. Van Doren, designed by J. K. Dow & D. Z. Hubbell was built in 1908 (at a cost of $25,000) as the "domestic economy" building. At the time it was the only structure west of Chicago devoted entirely to Home Economics courses. Named for Ms. Nancy L. Van Doren (the first building on campus named after a woman) professor of English and Librarian at the start of WSU.
