Description

1 broadside : map (on verso) ; 26 x 44 cm.
View broadside text: http://kaga.wsulibs.wsu.edu/zoom/zoom.php?map=wsu204
This map is drawn from an advertisement by the Northern Pacific for the sale of bonds to finance the construction of its transcontinental route. After beginning their fundraising efforts in the summer of 1870, approximately thirty million dollars in bonds had been sold by the end of 1871, which at the time seemed, wrongly, as it turned out, enough to allow for an early completion of the railroad.
The projected routes on the map are very approximate. The route along the Columbia River was intended as the main line of the railroad, with the northern line across the Cascades a mere branch.
