When its favorable agricultural conditions became known, a population boom occurred, with several new towns popping up between 1875 and 1880. In 1881, Garfield County was created out of Columbia County, and named after former President James Garfield, who had been assassinated earlier that year. In 1883, Garfield County was further subdivided, as the eastern portion of it became Asotin County.
