Sur., and from Actual Field Surveys by Henry Carr, C.E., March, 1888. <br>This map depicts this area in its heyday. The majority of the mines here are silver mines, with a small amount of gold mining. When silver prices fell drastically in the 1890s, the area's mines began inevitably closing. <br>When Okanogan County was formed out of Stevens County in 1888, Ruby City (center right on the map) was made the County Seat. Some suspect this was accomplished primarily through bribery, Ruby City having the reputation of being the territory's wildest city (one visitor termed it "the Babylon of the west"). The County Seat moved to Salmon City (now Conconully, lower left on the map) by election the following year. Today, nothing remains of Ruby City but a wide spot in the road and traces of old foundations. <br>The planned town of Arlington (top center) apparently never came to fruition. It should not be confused with the city of Arlington which is now located in Snohomish County, Washington.
